Mexican journalist Lydia Cacho, who also runs a shelter for battered women and children in Cancun, has exposed a web of business and political elites behind a child pornography ring there. She has been detained and harassed by authorities, received numerous death threats and survived to win international human rights prizes from Amnesty International, UNESCO and the U.S. State Department. Since her expose the list of her enemies has grown to include some of the most powerful men in Mexico. In the last eight years at least 21 reporters in Mexico have been killed. Her international visibility has kept Cacho alive.

OLA's 5th Latino Film Festival

OLA of Eastern Long Island, Inc. holds its 5th Latino Film Festival this October at various Hamptons venues.

The schedule includes film screenings October 3rd (Parish Art Museum, Southampton) and October 25th (Guild Hall, East Hampton), as well as an October 4th OLA Fund Raiser Fiesta at Ziggy's of Bridgehampton.

The films are Peter Raymont's A Promise to the Dead: The Exile Journey of Ariel Dorfman, Carlos Sorín's El Perro, Juan Carlos Cremata's Viva Cuba, and Lucía Puenzo's XXY.

LI Festival of Races Update: Latinos Excel in Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, 5K

Latino runners performed well in this weekend's Long Island Festival of Races.

Carlos Sauce (02:36:23) finished 2nd and Julio Sauce (02:42:03) finished 4th in the Long Island Festival of Races's Marathon; both are from Brooklyn. Jaime Palacios of Fresh Meadows, Queens finished 7th (06:45:00).

In the half marathon, Felipe Garcia (01:11:48) of Brooklyn took 1st place; Franklin Diaz (01:13:11) of South Farmingdale came in 2nd; and Angel Confesor (01:15:45) of Brooklyn finished 4th.

In the 10K, Maria Morales (00:37:56) of Brentwood finished 2nd; while Mauricio Duarte (00:39:16) of Mineola finished 3rd. Nassau Legislator (D-Farmingdale) David Mejias finished a respectable 201st (out of 700 runners) with a time of 00:56:29.

South Farmingdale's Franklin Diaz Wins LI Festival of Races 5K

This weekend is the Long Island Festival of Races. Upwards of 8,000 runners are expected to compete in a four separate races: 5K, 10K, Half Marathon (13.1 miles)and Marathon (26.2 miles). The Marathon is Sunday, May 4th, starting on Charles Lindbergh Blvd. in Nassau County's Hub district and finishing in Eisenhower Park.

The newly added 5K race was run today . The runner was the best time was South Farmingdale's Franklin Diaz, 24 years, with a completion time of 16:09:00. New York City's Edwin Acosta clocked the 4th best time at 18:48:00. And Jaime Orellana St.James ranked 12th at 21:04:00.

2008 Spring Gala Benefit for Círculo de la Hispanidad, Inc.

The 2008 Spring Gala Dinner Dance will be held on May 16, 2008 at the Garden City Hotel in New York, to help benefit Círculo de la Hispanidad, a not for profit Hispanic community organization with Centers in Hempstead and Long Beach, NY.

At the Gala, Circulo de la Hispanidad will be honoring outstanding individuals who have helped the organization. Mr. Joseph M. Mottola, R.A., Vice President, H2M Group and a resident of Massapequa is the lead architect in charge of the new community center that H2M has designed on behalf of Circulo.

Circulo de la Hispanidad serves over 20,000 individuals and their families in Nassau County, NY through a comprehensive continuum of social services, recreation, education cultural and economic development programs.

The construction of the community center was started last year and the estimated completion date will be in 2009.

Benefit Concert for Wyandanch's Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church

The Bob Morris Irish Band will perform a second benefit concert for Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Wyandanch on Wednesday, February 27, at the Nag's Head Ale House in Huntington.

A free-will offering will be received to help rebuild the outreach center, which serves 1,000 needy residents each month on a nonsectarian basis in a community which is more than 75% black and nearly 20% Hispanic. Both the outreach center and rectory were devastated by an arson attack a few weeks ago.

The band’s first benefit concert, on January 23, generated more than $10,000 from a standing-room-only crowd of more than 200. Fr. Bill Brisotti, pastor of the Wyandanch parish, has been lead banjoist with the Bob Morris Irish Band for many years.

Sebastián's Christmas Gift

Sebastián Jiménez Piña, the 5-year-old boy from Peru whose family got a "Christmas miracle" when they landed visas to come here so his cancerous brain tumor could be treated, has undergone surgery at Schneider Children's Hospital.

Alex Gallego Fights for the Hispanic Cultural Center

Oyster Bay's Alex "El Torito" Gallego fought Brian "The Hyatt Hitman" Kramer in the ring at the Fifth Annual Long Island Fight for Charity on Nov. 19, at the Long Island Hilton in Melville.

The two men went punch for punch for three rounds to support local not-for-profit organizations.

"Being in the ring was a very overwhelming and exciting experience," said Alex Gallego.

"We had a lot of hometown people there and that made things special.

Most important was that we got publicity for the Hispanic Cultural Center (HCC) C.A.R.E. program and that funds were raised not only for them, but for all those wonderful charities," he said.
